The current Fukuya Department Store main building was opened as the Fukuya Department Store new building in Apr. 1938. At the time, the eight-story building with two underground floors was unique in being equipped with both heating and cooling. As the war situation worsened, the building was one of the buildings of strong construction requisitioned by the government and other national institutions. When the bombing occurred, the interior of the building was completely burned by the intense surge of wind and fire from the blast. From Aug. 17, 1945, the second and third floors of the Fukuya Department Store were used as a temporary isolation hospital. The building was used in this capacity for approximately one month until the symptoms of atomic bomb-related illness were fully understood.

From approx. Oct. 1945, cleanup of the site and collection of funds for reconstruction began. In 1954, reconstruction of the entire building was completed. After this, additional construction and alteration was performed four times up to 1985. In the third round of construction in 1972, the exterior of the building was entirely renovated.
